"The sun is bright in the Philippines, rising early as the roosters crow, a passing jeepney honks and music plays from someone's kitchen. When I awake at home at 5:30am, I am a grumpy, scornful woman, but in the Philippines, where the sun glows fiery hot all day, and children laugh as I brush my teeth, and I help build someone's home who could not otherwise have a home, I am in good spirits at 5:30 am, ready to start the day."
- Shelli Bond, Australian, volunteer to the Philippines |
40% of the Philippines' 80 million people live below the poverty line, with an estimated 4.2 million families in need of decent shelter. Clustered shacks dominate Manila; families live crowded together under bridges, or dangerously close to railway tracks. Urban slum dwellings are pieced together from scrap wood and rusty metal sheets, while families in rural areas construct huts made from bamboo and palm leaves. These homes offer neither protection from pollution nor access to clean water and sanitation, and are threatened by annual monsoon floods.
During your build project you will build simple, decent houses in partnership with local Filipino people. You will experience traditional Filipino warmth and hospitality, and will contribute to one family's dream of a home.
