On December 16, 2021, just a week before Christmas, the Philippines was struck by one of the world’s strongest storms this year– Typhoon Rai (local name: Odette).

The typhoon made nine landfalls in seven provinces and brought torrential rains. It triggered life-threatening storm surges, flash floods, and landslides, washing away and damaging houses, livelihoods, agriculture, and infrastructures. Violent winds uprooted trees and blew away roofs and walls, leaving impassable roads and making it difficult for humanitarian assistance to reach the severely affected communities.

Typhoon Rai left massive destruction, impacting 11 regions, damaging thousands of homes and infrastructures, forcing cities and municipalities to declare State of Calamity. The number of casualties continues to climb every day while over 4.8 million affected people try to pick up the pieces left in their towns and rise from the catastrophe with the hope that aid is coming their way.

They need your help! With your contribution, we can provide relief and support the recovery of affected families and communities in Southern Leyte, Cebu, and Negros Occidental. Your donation can help ensure their health and safety by providing hygiene kits and household kits including sleeping mats, blankets, and emergency solar lamps. You can also help restore their homes by donating for shelter repair. The kits will address the immediate needs of sanitation and hygiene and provide protection and comfort. The shelter repair will help families rebuild their homes through house damage assessment, provision of construction materials, and skilled labor support.

With every act of generosity, we can help families and communities in their pathway to recovery and resilience. Together, we RISE to make this holiday season most meaningful by showing compassion and helping the affected families. Let us spark hope, spread kindness, and share the blessings with those who need it the most.

At this time of pandemic, everyone is asked to stay at home. However, not everyone has a decent home to stay safe.

Millions of Filipinos living in cramped housing are at higher risk of COVID-19 infection. The global pandemic has magnified the housing problem as everyone is forced to stay at home. In Metro Manila alone, roughly 4 million Filipinos lack a decent place to live. They are living in overcrowded spaces inadequate for physical distancing, in an unhealthy outbreak-prone environment, or worse, without a roof, walls, or sanitation facilities to protect them from the virus. But with everyone’s support and contribution, we can emerge from the crisis stronger together and help vulnerable families RISE through safe and decent shelter. Our work has never been more urgent, and we need YOU to RISE with us now, more than ever. Help us build homes, communities, and hope and provide families the foundation for a brighter and healthier life.

Support our RISE Communities Program

(Resilient, Inclusive, Sustainable, Empowered)

Housing

A hand up, not a hand-out

Through our regular housing programs, Habitat aims to provide dignified housing for all by encouraging our homepartner families to contribute their own labor called ‘sweat equity’ and repay the cost of their home through an affordable payment plan, enabling Habitat to build more homes and help more families in need. In partnership with donors and volunteers, we support these families by improving their access to basic social services such as clean water and sustainable energy.

Community Development

Empower communities

Integrating a holistic, community-led approach, not only do we help construct essential community facilities but also strengthen and capacitate our homepartners to become self-reliant in addressing their community's socio-economic needs. We empower our communities towards sustainability by initiating programs and trainings on organizational development, capacity-building and skills development, solid waste management, community enterprise and livelihood, and financial literacy.

Disaster Risk Reduction
and Response

Build back better, safer, stronger

We utilize our core competency in shelter to provide assistance to vulnerable families and communities in times of crisis and disaster. To aid in their pathway to resilience, our support can range from providing trainings on community-based disaster risk management and contingency planning to distributing shelter repair kits and WASH kits to permanent housing solution and comprehensive community development intervention. Together with our partners, donors, and volunteers, we rise to help rebuild homes, hope, dreams, and lives.

Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene

Health begins at home

We engage the whole community, especially children, pregnant women, and indigenous peoples, in increasing their awareness and improving their behavior on hygiene and sanitation not only to prevent diseases but also to boost their health and overall well-being. With the help of field experts and WASH consultants, we have developed a training module that would help the community understand the importance of water conservation, proper hygiene, and sanitation in creating a clean, safe, healthy environment for families to live and thrive in.

Youth & Volunteer Engagement

Shape shelter advocates

At Habitat, every helping hand matters. That's why we mobilize volunteers from different sectors and the youth to become change-makers and Legacy Builders. From building homes and supporting communities to interacting with our homepartners, we offer a variety of opportunities for a fulfilling volunteer experience. We also train the youth to become community leaders through the Leadership Academy and the annual Habitat Young Leaders Build season. Through these initiatives, we aim to amplify their voice to advocate for decent shelter for all.
